3 Mile Duck

A couple of weeks ago navigating this snow packed two-lane road was easy, however today the conditions are much different. An additional foot of snow has turned this seemingly wide road into a narrow one-lane rutted route.

With the truck locked into 4-wheel drive, we are on a one-way white-knuckle rally until we can find a turnaround spot. Finally and not a moment too soon we come upon a southern facing windswept corner where we can turn around, just in front of a huge snow drift blocking the inaccessible road ahead. We stop the truck but now face another dilemma. Our purpose for the drive is to duck hunt but we are miles from our destination.

Only days before when we planned our last minute duck hunting trip, we decided we’d make this trip easy on ourselves and let our wallets do the work. Yes, we would have to drive for hours just for a few minutes of fast and furious jump-shooting the river, but it was the final day of duck season after all and we didn’t have many options in the dead of winter.

As we sat in the truck and assessed the situation we struggled with the options before us but finally decided to walk the remaining 3 miles, all in hopes of jumping some ducks. This hunt wasn’t going to be so “easy on ourselves” after all.

In the end the duck hunting trip was an absolute success, we ended up with a total of 6 ducks but the prize “3 mile duck” was the drake Pintail that my son shot!
