Drive Drive Drive

Drive, drive, drive, we had our share of that this past week, a ten hour trip one way for a day and a half of hunting. “Crazy” you say, maybe so. But we had a rifle deer hunt awaiting our arrival back in Utah and we wanted to make it home in time for the opener.

The whole crew...are we antelope hunting or duck hunting?

It turns out that the antelope tags we held were issued for an area on the eastern side of Wyoming, which is always a challenge for do-it-yourselfers due to the high percentage of private property. Be we would not be deterred. Opening morning found us scouting as we hunted. And since this was our first time to the area, we relied heavily on our trusty GPS. The area was a checker board of private and public property and the antelope appeared to be aware of these invisible but real boundaries.

Big buck knew he was safe...barely on private property                 This small buck wasn't sticking around

After a long day without a single shot from our rifles, I was the first to connect on an antelope late in the afternoon. We were only able to close the distance to 342 yards, but with a solid rest for my .270 the antelope dropped on the first shot.

The second day of hunting turned out to be a little easier than the first since we learned a lot from the previous day. We even managed to get close enough to take some pictures of some smaller antelope. However, those big wily bucks continued to roam far off across the open plains and didn’t want to cooperate. But finally with a lot of perseverance, the boys closed the distance to that magical 340 yard range and finished up with our final buck just before noon!
