Elk tag...finally...!

07/06/2008

The time has finally come...well, almost...to go elk hunting. I don't mean time to go on just any ol' elk hunt, but the one I've been waiting on for almost 20 years!

Here in Utah, the best elk hunting occurs on land where they manage the elk populations by issuing only limited entry permits. What does that mean, it means that premium elk hunting is nearly a once in a life time hunting opportunity...you have to get lucky and draw a coveted limited draw elk tag.

I've been putting in for the draw elk hunt since the early 90's and now my time to hunt 'big' elk has come. On September 13th, I will take to the field with a few other lucky hunters in hopes of bagging a huge bull elk! My first scouting trip will be this next weekend, July 12th. Yeah, the elk won't be in the same places that I'm likely to find them in September, but it's time to get out and put the bino's on them to see what the Monroe Mountains have to offer!

The elk scouting trip was great!  In fact, I wasn't sure what I'd see during the middle of July, but I ended up seeing around ten nice bulls. Most were nice 5 and 6 point bulls. However, I did see one 6 x 7 and one huge 6 point, but those two bulls were on private ground.

Most of the bulls I saw were during the early morning and the late evening (of course), but I did see the 6 x 7 right during the middle of the day.

Just two more months and I'll be hunting big bull elk with my .340 Weatherby...!
