If I only had a limited entry elk tag :)
Sure wish I had a limited entry tag…but doesn’t everyone :) This year I got an archery elk spike tag and decided I would only hunt for a spike (option to take spike or cow with this permit). I hunted hard and only saw small deer and mostly bigger bulls and cows.
Oh, the deer in the pic, well those were in my back yard a couple of days before the opener of the archery deer/elk hunt.
Only once over a 3 week period did I see a spike elk. In fact, I saw 2 spikes and a two point spike bull all together at the edge of the timber. Wish I could have gotten a picture of them because the two point spike antlers were huge!
It was evening just before sunset when I spotted the group of yearling bulls out in a clearing, just near the edge of the timber. I put on a stalk that landed me right in the middle of 7 cows and a nice mature bull elk. Unfortunately the 6 point bull and his cows were between me and the yearling bulls. I tried to back out and circle around on the small bulls, but time ran out and it got dark.
I did have an enjoyable hunt, just being able to be out in the mountains seeing elk wallow, bugle, etc. and sneaking within 40 yards of several mature bulls was icing on the cake!
