2014’s gone…but not before we ended it with a pile of geese!
Slick roads for sure Conditions were treacherous
Less than a week before our annual out-of-state Canada goose hunt, we were experiencing balmy winter weather with temperatures in the high 40’s. But that all changed on Christmas day with the arrival of snow across most of the western United States. And instead of experiencing dry clear driving conditions for our trip to Wyoming, we instead had to battle ice packed roads with blowing snow at below zero temperatures. But luckily for us we made it to our destination safe and sound, rolling into our hotel parking lot just after dark.

Our hotel gladly accommodated our 4:00 a.m. breakfast request, so by 5:30 a.m. we had arrived at our predetermined rendezvous spot to meet up with our local hunting buddy. Just before shooting time we had finished placing the last of our 175+ decoy spread. With temperatures being below zero, it took a few hours before the geese started to fly.
Our decoy spread must have looked somewhat realistic to the geese because we had several geese land in our spread a few yards from our layout blinds. However, the hunting was actually quite tough as we hunted both days from sunup until sundown before calling it quits. It was great to end 2014 with a pile of Canada geese, time to make plans for a spring 2015 snow goose hunt!
