Chasing Turkeys!

Hunting (or should I say chasing) turkeys this past weekend was as hard as ever.  I don't know if our difficulties were because of the time of year or from over calling, but the turkeys were not interested in (or at least they weren't coming to) our calls.  We called and called and never had any turkeys come to within shotgun range.

We did have them gobbling at us all weekend and at one point we had turkeys get within 100 yards of us, but I think the only reason they got so close was because they were heading our way to reach some tall roosting trees.  We actually had two hens fly-up right where we were sitting, but the toms stood out at 100 yards strutting and wandering around until after sunset.  At that point we called it a night and planned to ambush them in the morning.  The morning ambush didn't work at all.  They flew down, came semi-close to us and then it seemed that our calling literally made them head in the opposite direction.

After coming to the conclusion that the turkeys weren't going to come to our calls, (probably our lack of turkey hunting experience) we decided to chase them.  The chase was more of a pursuit.  Our pursuit concluded in a long hard stalk that included a long 150 yard crawl on our hands and knees towards the gobbling toms.  The last leg of the stalk was a surprise attack; we popped up over a ridge and there in front of us were 10 gobblers!  We shot the 2 closest gobblers, the biggest weighed 22 lbs., 9 inch beard and had 1 inch spurs!
