Done Blowed Up

Canada geese, widgeon ducks
Don't shoot, duck season barely ended

Done blowed up, but still finished with a pile of geese. This year we headed to northern Wyoming in search of Canada geese. While it was a bit chilly, 4 degrees was better than the sub-zero temperatures that we’ve faced during past hunts.

The frosty fog ridden morning made for a spectacular backdrop for the first geese of the morning. The echoes of the honking Canada geese had our trigger fingers itching long before the geese eerily emerged from the mist.

Run for cover, can hear them coming                                                       Goose Down!

As our last goose fell to the ground, I pulled out my phone which read just past 10:00 in the morning and we had our 30 geese.

Mid-morning, fog had burned off, we had our limits

While the skies were clear, it still only warmed up into the low teens. However, Scott had promised that if we shot our limit of geese, he would pick up the last of our birds and pose with the pile of geese without his shirt. It only took a few minutes for him to take our circle of geese and make a big pile, but we enjoyed the hilarity of it all!

Good to his word...                                                    Definitely not as warm as it looks

The next day was a blue bird day, plenty of sunshine but cold. Early on there was some concern as to whether or not the bright sun would create concealment problems for us, but as the first birds floated across our blinds on their first pass overhead, we knew we were well hidden. While the birds flew a bit later than the previous day, we still finished up with our 30 birds and it wasn’t yet eleven o’clock.

Blew up real good                                                              Another day, limited out

Now that we had our limits of geese, we took a few minutes before gathering to reflect upon our near miss. It happened on our next to last volley. A flock of eight or so geese dropped right into the hole in front of us as shots rang out. As quickly as the gunfire ceased, the chatter ramped up. Amidst the buzz I looked to my right and saw what had caused all of the commotion, Jeff’s gun had blown up during the last barrage but luckily nobody had been hit by flying debris. In the end the situation didn’t end as a total loss since Jeff now had an incredible story to tell along with a cool trophy to hang on his wall.
