Best goose hunting in Wyoming
Where is the best place to hunt geese in Wyoming? I don’t know for sure, but I'd say the best goose hunting in Wyoming is the eastern part of the state which seems to hold a lot of birds.
For Christmas this year, my son Dallas and I were able to travel east to Wyoming to hunt Canada geese with Lewis Outdoor Adventures. While old man winter has yet to visit us here in Utah, that was not the case in eastern Wyoming; it was cold, snowy and windy. Hunting the snow covered fields in temperatures that dipped below zero degrees Fahrenheit was difficult, but not as challenging as dealing with the occasional 50 mph wind gusts that had us chasing decoys across fields. Too bad I didn’t capture those moments on film because now that I think back on the trip, the scene was quite comical. You have several guys hunkered down in their layout blinds, braving the cold winter weather, their decoys and calling have outsmarted the flock of committed Canada geese, they watch as the geese struggle against the stiff wind ever-so-slowly making their way to the edge of the spread, the shot will be called momentarily, the guys wait…, suddenly a gust of wind sends decoys airborne, instantly the geese flare, extended wings catch the wind, before the hunters can react the geese are out of shooting range, with layout blinds wide open they stare in disbelief as they watch the decoys dance across the snow covered field as the geese fly out of sight.
Goose on its way to us Making a pass before committing
Our guide Jordan did a great job dealing with the elements as noted by our smiling faces shown here in the pics. He successfully directed a lot of birds our way and even had geese land in our decoys. If you’ve never experienced a flock of big Canada honkers dropping into a spread of decoys, you are missing out.
The early part of the season is usually good, but goose hunting tends to get better toward the latter part of the season. Typically the big goose migration from Montana has happened by January, but this year’s warm weather still has the geese roosting in Montana. However, we did get to experience a huge wad of geese (a couple of thousand at a time) all get up and turn parts of the horizon dark with their masses.
You can bet that we are planning another hunt again next year!
