Grouse and more Grouse
As summer wound down, we took advantage of the mild weather and got out on a few small game hunts. Even though we were a week late getting out on the dove hunt, we still managed to bag 13 birds for the day...just enough to make a nice little meal!
Our next small game adventure was after blue grouse. We put lots of miles on our boots only to have our dogs locate one loan bird. But the trusty ol' double barrel 20 gauge did the trick and the big dusky grouse hit the ground. At least there were plenty of rabbits around for my youngest to begin honing his shooting skills; adding just enough to the pot to make a respectable sized meal.

The following two weekends were reserved to go pursue the largest of the grouse species, the sage grouse. Traipsing across the vast high plains in search of the elusive sage grouse was exciting, never knowing when you might happen onto them. We had great success and got our weekend limits.

The fun didn't stop there as the second weekend was basically a repeat of the previous one. Watching the dogs work the birds was both intense and enjoyable, an event that never gets old. After again getting our limit of sage grouse, we took some time to get us a few more tasty cottontails.

The hunting trip in its entirety was awesome! We saw a variety of animals, got to experience the rising of the supermoon and just plain enjoyed being out together. Next up, ducks!
